Margarita Mooney Clayton, associate professor in the Department of Practical Theology at Princeton Theological Seminary and executive director of the Scala Foundation, will serve as our invited lecturer. She will speak on Jacques Maritain's understanding of creativity in education. Her lecture will be followed by a Q&A session and reception.
Jacques Maritain and Creativity in Education
How can a Catholic understanding of the human person contribute to the development of a graced imagination? This talk will draw on Jacques Maritain’s writings on culture and education to argue that human creativity stems from both intellectual and practical virtues. The imitation of exemplars is a step towards mastering knowledge that leads to authentic creativity. Educational practices that encourage students to look out to nature, music, art, and story then to look into their souls via contemplation are able to unite the imagination and intellect. Understanding the spiritual dynamism that leads to creativity in art and science is crucial to building a popular culture that is also a beautiful culture.
